(05/12/15) Pawtucket – George Edward “Skip” Furey, 84, of Pawtucket passed away on Sunday at the Elmhurst Extended Care Center in Providence. He was the loving husband of Alice (Waskiel) Furey for 57 years, a son of the late Edward and Margaret (Cusick) Furey, a father of five, and an adoring grandfather of five. George was a U.S. Navy veteran of the Korean War, proudly serving on the USS Baltimore. A lifelong resident of Pawtucket, he was employed for many years with Public Oil Company and McKee Oil Company. As a dedicated community volunteer, he spent many years coaching Fairlawn Girls Sports, Little League, CYO basketball, and participating in church activities at St. Maria Goretti. George had a strong appreciation for the simpler things in life, and most important always, was family. He was full of wit with an infectious smile and loved to dance the Irish jig and sing Irish lullabies to his grandchildren. A graduate of Pawtucket West High Class of ’49, he was very proud of his basketball career, earning All-State honors. Skip was deemed the Rangers red-headed hero by helping his team to State Championship Titles. George was also an accomplished amateur boxer. He thoroughly enjoyed passing on these talents to his kids and grandkids. He will be lovingly missed by many. Besides his wife, George is survived by five children: Thomas Furey of Narragansett; Robert Furey and his partner, Alex Zweig of San Diego, CA; Alan Furey and his wife Terri McCaffrey of Warwick; Lauren Hartnett and her husband Matthew of North Attleboro, MA; and Susan DeMartino and her husband Michael of Cumberland; five grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. He was the brother of James Furey and his wife Lucille of Tonawanda, NY; the late Margaret McIlmail and her husband, the late Leo McIlmail, Jr.; and the late Eileen Raymond and her husband, the late George E. Raymond. The funeral family extends sincere gratitude to the staff of Elmhurst Extended Care Center as well as Home & Hospice Care of RI for their special care and compassion. His funeral will be held Friday, May 15 at 10 A.M. at Bellows Funeral Chapel, 160 River Road, Lincoln. Burial, with military honors, will be in Resurrection Cemetery, Cumberland.
