(04/27/14) Pawtucket – Savino P. Salerno, 95, passed away Saturday, April 26, 2014. He was the beloved husband of the late Marie Cecile (L’Abbe) Salerno. Raised in Providence, a son of the late Biagio and Carmella (DeBonis) Salerno, he resided in Warwick before moving to Pawtucket in 1970. Savino was a graduate of the University of RI and worked for the Leesona Corp. for 30 years. As a member of our “Greatest Generation” he served in the U.S. Navy aboard the USS Thomas Jefferson and was an active participant in the Normandy Invasion of June 6, 1944. He was proud of his Country, Naval Service and Italian Heritage. Savino loved dancing, golf, public speaking, and was a member of the East Bay and Lincoln Toastmasters Clubs and the Gray Panthers. He leaves a sister-in-law, Mrs. Rita (Michael) Salerno; four nephews, Robert, Joseph, William and John Salerno; three nieces, Patricia Oliver, Kathy Ford and Michelle Moynihan and his great friends, Georgina and Mike Morris and Ray Skinner. He was the brother of the late Antonio, Rose, Mary, Giro, Joseph and Michael Salerno. His funeral with Military Honors will be held Wednesday at 9 a.m. from WILLIAM W. TRIPP Funeral Home, 1008 Newport Ave., Pawtucket, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in St. Cecilia Church, 755 Central Ave. Interment will follow at Notre Dame Cemetery.
