(09/25/14) SMITH, Sister Margaret, 93, formerly Sister Mary Ambrose, a Sister of Mercy and former elementary school teacher, passed away on Tuesday, September 23, 2014 at Mount St. Rita Health Centre, Cumberland. Born in Swampscott, MA, she was the daughter of the late Francis E. and Margaret (Dorgan) Smith. She entered the Sisters of Mercy in 1941 and made final vows in 1947. Early in her religious life, Sister studied at Catholic Teachers College in Providence where she received a B.A. in Education. She taught in elementary grades in Rhode Island and Massachusetts and in the early to mid-80’s, Sister served as Catholic Chaplain and provided pastoral care at the Rhode Island Medical Center in Cranston as well as in Chicago at Mercy Hospital. Sister Margaret ministered in New Bedford at the Regina Pacis Center, and in the New Bedford public schools in the ESL Program. In her retirement, Sister resided at Franklin Court in Bristol and, for the past few years, at Mount St. Rita Health Centre in Cumberland. In addition to her religious community, the Sisters of Mercy, she is survived by eleven nieces and nephews and their children. She was the sister of the late Frank Smith, Thomas Smith and Alice Dunn. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Monday, September 29, 2014 at 11:00 am in Mount St. Rita Chapel, Cumberland. Visitation will be on Monday from 9:30 to 10:50 in the Warde Room of Mount St. Rita Health Centre with a Mercy Prayer Service at 10:20 am. Interment will be in St. Ann Cemetery, Cranston with the procession leaving Mount St. Rita at 12:45 pm.
