(03/31/15) Jody (Vaughn) Harrison PhD, 62, of Cranston, passed away on March 28, 2015 at home. Born in Providence, she was a daughter of the late Richard V. Vaughn and Ann (Adams) Colvin and step daughter of the late Kenneth M. Colvin (Lt. C.F.D. Retd). Ms. Harrison was a Legal Administrator for Hodosh, Spinella & Angelone in Providence for 27 years retiring in 2008 due to illness. She received her PhD from Johnson & Wales. She was self taught as an artist and painter and enjoyed interior decorating. She was the beloved sister of Richard Lincoln Vaughn and his wife Lea of Hope and Judy Vaughn of Coventry. Loving aunt of Megan Ostrander, Richard S. Vaughn and Loren Vaughn. Relatives and friends are invited to Visitation on Thursday from 9:00-11:00 am followed by a Funeral Service at 11:00 am in THE URQUHART-MURPHY FUNERAL HOME, 800 Greenwich Avenue, Route 5, Warwick (Exit 12A on I-95). Arleen I (Demers) Petti – West Warwick, RI

(04/16/15) PETTI, Arleen I., (Demers), 95, of Petti Dr., West Warwick, passed away Saturday April 11, 2015 in her home. She was the wife of the late Guido J. Pettinicchio. Born in West Warwick, a daughter of the late Everett C. and Anne (Dennigan) Demers. She was a lifelong resident of West Warwick. She is survived by seven children, Angela Salas, Donna Soares, Mark Petti, Deborah Casey, Michael Petti, Kim Petti and Susan Petti; fifteen grandchildren, six great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. She was the sister of the late Barbara Champagne. She was a graduate of St. James School, John F. Deering High School and Rhode Island College of Education where she earned a degree in teaching. In her early years Arleen enjoyed working with her father in his grocery store where she acquired an entrepreneurial spirit which in later years she would impart to her children. Upon graduation from college she worked for a brief period as a middle school teacher after which she stayed home to raise her seven children. Following the death of her Mother, she began a twenty four year career in community social work initially with the Town of West Warwick and later with the State of RI where she focused on developing independence in her clients through finding gainful employment. A renaissance woman she was an accomplished seamstress, water color artist, golfer, gardener and landscaper. She had a passion for tending her many gardens and building stone walls used to terrace her hillside yard. Following her retirement in 1983, she traveled, cared for her grandchildren and actively pursued management of her investments. She was driven by the goal of building a portfolio of investments for her children. She also was an active contributor to research conducted by the National Institutes of Health as a 20 year participant in the Women’s Health Initiative, one of the largest and most successful public health prevention studies of it’s kind. With all her life\’s accomplishments and diverse interests, the role of which Arleen was most fond was that of Mother and Grandmother. She always credited her family as her greatest source of strength and profound joy! Her funeral will be held Monday, April 20, 2015 at 9 am from the HENAULT – GALLOGLY Funeral Home, 5 Eddy St., West Warwick. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 am in Sacred Heart Church, 820 Providence Street, West Warwick. Interment will follow in St. Mary Cemetery, West Warwick. (04/15/15) William O. Fournier, 84, formerly of Central Falls, passed away Monday after an illness. He was the husband of the late Dorothy (Grossi) Fournier. Born in Pawtucket, a son of Winifred (Flood) Fournier and lived most of Central Falls. Bill was employed at at the former ‘Nissen’s’ Bakery and formerly named Gorman’s Bakery for 45 years before retiring. He also had served in the US Coast Guard. His only survivor is a son William M. He was a member of USA Dance, MASSabda, Chapter 3002, and Carousel Ballroom Dancers, performing monthly at nursing homes and retirement centers. He was a Deacon and Choir Member of the First Presbyterian Church of Newport. Besides his wife of 25 years, he leaves children, Elizabeth Machado of Westport and Paul, Steven and Reuben Machado; grandchildren; great-grandchildren; a brother, Herminio Machado and his wife Maria Evelina of Somerset; nieces, nephews and cousins. Born in Providence, he was a son of the late Henry L. LaFleur, Sr. and Emilda (Lucier) LaFleur. Mr. LaFleur was a Machinist for Narragansett Foundry and Parkinson Co. until his retirement in 2004. He served in The United States Army. He also served as Secretary and Treasurer of the International Association of Machinists. He was the loving father of Wayne Sarachick and his wife Christine of Warwick, Laura White of Warwick, Daniel Sarachick and his wife Vanida of Putnam, CT, Brian LaFleur and his wife Erica of Coventry, Michael LaFleur and his wife Michelle of Woonsocket, Barry LaFleur of Coventry and Jennifer LaFleur of West Warwick. Alton A. “Ben” Powers – Providence, RI

(04/17/15) Alton “Ben” Powers, 64, comedian, actor, composer and artist, Alton ‘Ben” Powers, best known for his role as Thelma Evans’ husband, and football player, Keith Anderson, in the 1970’s hit series “Good Times” has died. Ben, also played “Moochie” on the CBS-TV hit “Mickey Spillane’s Mike Hammer” starring with Stacey Keach. Ben made numerous TV guest appearances on “Gimmie a Break,” “Flamingo Road,” “The Greatest American Hero,” “The New Odd Couple,” “Laverne & Shirley” and the PBS film “Brother to Dragons.” In addition to his TV work, Ben appeared in a number of films in the 1980’s including “Cheech & Chong’s Next Movie,” “Things Are Tough All Over” and “The Man Who Loved Women”. Ben was born at the Jewish Hospital in Brooklyn, NY on July 5, 1950. He was raised with his siblings in the Providence, RI home of his deceased grandparents Adelbert and Elizabeth Thomas with his aunt’s Elizabeth Thomas (deceased), and Eleanor Jane Thomas. As a young man, Ben was a choir member and cantor at the First Tabernacle in Providence, RI. He attended Hope High School and later, Rhode Island College’s “Upward Bound” program. Ben also loved to sketch and paint, attending classes at the Rhode Island School of Design before turning to acting. His great-great grandmother was the former slave, Harriet Powers, creator of the “Bible Quilt”. Her quilts are part of permanent collections at the Smithsonian Museum, Washington, DC., Museum of Fine Art, Boston, Ma., and the National Museum of History in Washington, DC Ben began his acting career at the Trinity Repertory Theatre in Providence, RI under Adrian Hall. A gifted pianist, composer and singer, Ben incorporated his beautiful singing voice and impressions into his stand-up comedy routines. He was discovered in Providence, where he signed with a Hollywood agent and went on to perform at Playboy Clubs in NY, Los Angeles and Boston. His first TV appearances were on the NBC-TV series “Rowan and Martin’s Laugh-in” where he was a regular and featured in skits with Robin Williams and Betty Davis, among others. Alton ‘Ben’ Powers, nee Alton Adelbert Powers passed away on April 6, 2015 at the age of 64 in New Bedford Massachusetts. Ben is survived by his mother; two sisters, Ms. Yvonne Brown of Cherry Hill, NJ, and Ms. Maya Breuer of Warwick, RI (husband Stephen Casserly). Uncles, Norman Thomas of Newburg, NY and Ronald L. Thomas of Cranston RI (wife Dot Thomas); Aunts, Eleanor Jane Thomas of Suffolk, VA and Mary Thomas of Pawtucket, RI; four nephews, three nieces, three grand nephews and two grandnieces; and a host of cousins and friends. He is preceded in death by his brother Arnold “Pete” Salzman, and his sister Sherry Lynn Powers. Ben was perhaps best loved and remembered for his performance on “Good Times.” He was a gifted artist who loved animals and delighted those around him with his wit and intellect. His kind and gentle temperament will be sorely missed. Wood and the the daughter of the late William E., Sr., and Harriet A. (Hunt) Pendleton. Sister to Audrey Dusza, Helen Bromley, William E. Pendleton, Jr., and the late Harriet Langlais. Carol was a telephone operator and later a supervisor for New England Telephone until her retirement. She was a member of the Telecom Pioneers. Carol was a communicant of the Cornerstone of Faith United Methodist Church and a lifelong member of the United Methodist Women in Coventry. Joe had a humble and friendly way about him who was always willing to help someone in need. He had a love for music and was a great uncle always keeping his family in line. At the time of his death he was surrounded and lovingly cared for by his family. (04/20/15) John Marshall Burns “The Old Saw Man”, 95, of Fall River, formerly of Tiverton, husband of Ann Marie (Fernandes) Burns and husband of the late Eva A. (Jacobs) Burns, died Sunday, April 19, 2015. For 80 years he operated Burns Tools, Fall River, founded by his late father and continued by his sons. He was a member of St. Paul’s Masonic Lodge for over 50 years and was Superintendent of Amicable Congregational Church Sunday School in his earlier years. He was a Rogers High School Track Star and coached Tiverton Basketball and baseball. Besides his wife he leaves, four children, Muriel Bodington and her husband Fred of Little Compton, John Marshall “Spike” Burns, Jr. and his wife Marilyn of Portsmouth, RI, Jeffrey Burns and his wife Kathy of Tiverton and Elizabeth “Zibby” Burns and her husband Frank Primiano of Portsmouth; grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and stepsons, Manuel, James, John and David Salvador. He was the father of the late Marsha Lee Burns and the son of the late John J. and Harriet (Washburn) Burns. (04/20/15) Del GUIDICE, Robert W. “Bob”, 77, of West Greenwich, passed away Sunday, April 19, 2015. He was the loving husband of Beverly A. (DeMaio) Del Guidice, they had been married for 58 years. Born in Cranston, he was the son of the late Michael and Rose (Moretti) Del Guidice. Mr. Del Guidice served with the U.S. Air Force and received a Bachelors and a Master’s degree in education from RI College. He was an educator and chairman of the Science Department in the Warwick School Department teaching at Gorton and Warwick Veterans Memorial High School and served as treasurer of the Warwick Teachers Union. Bob also worked with his wife operating Greenwich Microscope Company. Mostly, he enjoyed his family and a good game of golf. Besides his wife he leaves three daughters, Patricia J. Bentley and her husband Bruce, Gina K. Del Guidice and Robin M. Cook; eight grandchildren, Lauren, Steven, Anthony, Meghan, Justyne, Jalena, Harry and Hanna; four great grandchildren, Neala, Alexis, Madelyn and Mackenziee; a sister-in-law, brothers-in-law and several nieces and nephews. He was the brother of the late Lucy Ferrucci, Michael Del Guidice and Gloria Tavares. Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial on Thursday, April 23, 2015 at 10 am in SS. John & Paul Church, 341 South Main St., Coventry. Interment will follow with military honors in St. Ann Cemetery. Visiting hours in the PRATA – GALLOGLY Funeral Home, 78 Providence St., West Warwick, Wednesday evening from 4-7 pm. Leonora (Miguel) Monteiro – Pawtucket, RI

(04/21/15) Pawtucket – Leonora (Miguel) Monteiro, 91, of Pawtucket died Saturday, April 18, 2015 at the Memorial Hospital of Rhode Island, Pawtucket. She was the wife of the late Alfredo Monteiro. Born in Bristol, a daughter of the late Elidio and Georgina (Rainha) Miguel, she had lived in Pawtucket for most of her life. Mrs. Monteiro was employed at the former American Insulated Wire Company, Pawtucket for 26 years before retiring in 1985. She was a communicant of St. Anthony’s Church, Pawtucket. She is survived by two sons, Joseph J. Monteiro and his wife, Susan of Pawtucket and Alfred Monteiro, Jr. and his wife, Jeanie of Marriottsville, MD; one sister, Ismenia Bernardo and her husband, José of Seekonk, MA; three grandchildren; one great grandson; and several nieces and nephews. She was the mother of the late John M. Monteiro. Her funeral will be held Thursday, April 23 at 8:45 A.M. from Bellows Funeral Chapel, 160 River Road, Lincoln with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 A.M. in St. Anthony’s Church, 32 Lawn Avenue, Pawtucket. Burial will be in Mount St. Mary’s Cemetery, Pawtucket. Relatives and friends are invited and may call Wednesday 5-8 P.M. Mabel (Mae) G (Mann) Childs – West Warwick, RI

(04/22/15) Mabel (Mae) G. Childs of West Warwick passed away on the 20th of April, at Woodpecker Hill Health Center, Coventry, RI, with family by her side. She was born in Newport News, Virginia on November 23rd, 1935, the daughter of Roy and Valora (Sartin) Mann. She married Gene C. Childs on October 24th 1961, and was married until his death on their 33rd wedding anniversary. She was a loving and devoted daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother, and a friend to anyone who needed one. She was an avid antique collector and dealer, the owner of Rosewood Antiques, in West Warwick, and a member of SENEADA, until the onset of her illness in 2005. Mabel is survived by her sister Ruth C. Mann of East Providence, her three children, Karen L. Therrien of Sterling, CT, Gary N. Childs of Warwick, and Patti A. Cremmen of Raynham, MA, two grandchildren, Raina P. Madison of West Warwick and Tanner M. Therrien of Sterling, CT, and a devoted best friend Joyce Shatkin of Cranston. A Memorial Service will be held at the Gorton-Menard Funeral Home in Coventry, RI on Saturday, April 25th at 11:00 AM, where everyone is encouraged to share thoughts and stories. There will be a celebration of life, for friends and family, at her former residence, 39 Woodside Ave., West Warwick, immediately following the service.
